Senior Capstone

About

All BS computer science, cybersecurity, and data science students complete a 3-quarter sr. capstone sequence in which they work as a team to design, develop, and deploy an industry-based hardware or software product for a client. Student groups work with their assigned client and faculty advisor to scope the project, identify milestones, develop a plan or design a solution to meet the client's needs, create a project plan to achieve the solution in a timely manner, and create appropriate documentation.

A Small Selection of Past Projects ...

  • Deploy sensors in the tanks of the Sea Discovery Center in Poulsbo to monitor temperature, water level, and other factors.
  • Develop an AI model to help speakers generate notes in preparation for a presentation.
  • Develop a model to determine the strength of soils along a proposed horizontal directional drill construction profile.
  • Develop a controller and associated software for a research underwater submersible.
  • Develop an AI tool to classify berry plant lifecycles from photos.
  • Develop a data ingestion process in both Python and MATLAB to process custom industry-specific data sets.

For Clients

Interested in becoming a client? Even if you have just an idea of a project that a team of talented sr. students might work on, please reach out to brainstorm. Sr. capstone projects start each quarter. Projects are pitched to students on the first day of class, and faculty pair students to projects.

To get started, please email cs.dept@wwu.edu the following:

  • Client name and contact.
  • High-level description of the software or hardware solution that you seek -- ideally, 1 paragraph, that will be pitched to students during client selection.
  • Anticipated start quarter (September, January, April)
  • Anticipated resources that you'll need -- compute, web server, specialized hardware, etc.
  • Any additional details -- need for NDA, access to data, etc.

The sr. project faculty coordinator will work with you to refine your project idea.
