Overview
The Computer Science, Secondary Ed. - Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) program is designed to provide exposure to the breadth of topics required to satisfy K6-12 students’ curiosity about how computers and technology work, now so central to daily life, and how students can personally leverage the learned knowledge to create their own futures. Since knowing computer science alone is not enough to be an effective, inspiring, and inclusive teacher, this major also includes coursework and field experience in the theory and methods of pedagogical content knowledge. This major both employs and creates emerging research on best-practices in computer science education.

By signing up as a Computer Science, Secondary Ed. Pre-Major you can start your journey to become a Computer Science educator on the best pathway! Benefits of becoming a pre-major include:
- Advising sessions & resources specific to the CS, Secondary Ed. Program
- Access to CS, Secondary Ed Pre-Major Courses such as: CSCI 241, CSCI 330, DATA 311, and an elective option CSCI 247
- Staying informed on upcoming events or workshops related to Computer Science education
- Advice & resources on putting together your application, including help with getting experience with youth in an educational setting
Students that have completed or enrolled in CSCI 141 are encouraged to sign up to become a CS, Secondary Ed. Pre-Major.
Major FAQ
Students can apply for the major while they're enrolled in CSCI 145 or have completed CSCI 145 with a C- or better.
Applications are submitted through Woodring. Application deadlines are listed at the top of this page.
When considering your application, Woodring looks at your endorsement evaluation, your cumulative GPA, completion of an English composition course, and all application requirements.
Applications for the Computer Science, BAE program require:
- Completion of CSCI 141 and CSCI 145 with a C- or better
- Experience with youth in an educational setting
- Scores from a basic skills test (ACT, SAT, or WEST-B) or a scheduled WEST-B exam
- 2 letters of recommendations
- One speaking to your work with youth in an educational setting
- One speaking to your CS skills
- 3 essays - Full prompts on the Secondary Education website.
