Mission Statement

The mission of the Computer Science Department is to provide the highest quality education in computer science; to perform research that advances the state-of-the-art in computer science; to produce graduates that are knowledgeable, articulate, principled, innovative, confident, and able to think critically; to be engaged in local, state, and national issues to the benefit of both the public and private sector; and to maintain a diverse college community.

Program Educational Objectives

Within a few years of graduation, graduates of the Data Science program will:

  1. Achieve professional excellence through rewarding employment in industry or the pursuit of advanced education.
  2. Be effective communicators and collaborators as members and leaders of diverse and multidisciplinary teams.
  3. Pursue continuous professional growth by acquiring and applying new knowledge, skills, and technologies to advance their careers.
  4. Be ethical and responsible professionals who contribute positively to local and global communities. 

Student Outcomes

Graduates of the Data Science program will have an ability to:

  1. Analyze a complex computing problem and apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s discipline.
  3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
  5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program’s discipline.
  6. Apply theory, techniques, and tools throughout the data science lifecycle and employ the resulting knowledge to satisfy stakeholders’ needs.
